Air Travel 101
What does standby mean?
Standby usually means you do not yet have a confirmed seat on that flight, or you are waiting for a different flight to open. It is not a guarantee. It is a waitlist managed by airline rules.
What to do first
- Ask whether you are confirmed or standby.
- Stay near the gate when names are called.
- Keep your original plan until the new seat is confirmed.
- Understand that priority order varies.
Step-by-step instructions
- Step 1
Check your boarding pass or app. If it shows seat assigned, you are usually confirmed. If it says standby or see agent, ask at the gate.
- Step 2
Find out whether standby is for an earlier flight, oversold flight, employee travel, or disrupted itinerary.
- Step 3
Stay close enough to hear announcements. Gate agents may call names quickly near boarding time.
- Step 4
Do not leave your original confirmed flight unless the airline confirms the change.
- Step 5
If you clear standby, check your baggage situation. A checked bag may not move to an earlier flight automatically.
- Step 6
If you do not clear, ask what happens next and whether your original seat remains protected.
Important things to check
- Seat assignment
- Standby list position
- Original booking
- Baggage handling
- Gate announcement timing
Common mistakes
- Thinking standby is the same as confirmed
- Walking away during boarding
- Cancelling a confirmed seat too early
- Forgetting baggage timing
What to do next
Standby is useful when you can be flexible. If you must arrive by a fixed time, keep confirmed options in view until a real seat is assigned.
