Airport Survival
Overnight at airports: what to know before settling in
Sleeping at an airport is sometimes a choice and sometimes a disruption. Either way, the first question is whether you can legally and practically stay where you are until the next flight.
What to do first
- Check whether the terminal stays open overnight.
- Choose a visible, lit area near staff.
- Keep bags secured and documents close.
- Know when security or check-in opens in the morning.
Step-by-step instructions
- Step 1
Ask airport staff whether passengers may remain airside or landside overnight. Some terminals close or clear passengers after last flights.
- Step 2
If you must exit, check visa or entry requirements before crossing immigration.
- Step 3
Choose a place with lighting, cameras, staff presence, bathrooms, and screens.
- Step 4
Keep valuables inside clothing or a zipped bag attached to you. Use luggage as a barrier, not a distant pile.
- Step 5
Plan warmth and hygiene. Airports can be cold, and shops may close.
- Step 6
Before sleeping, check the morning route: check-in desk, security opening, terminal, and boarding time.
Important things to check
- Airport overnight policy
- Security opening time
- Morning terminal
- Baggage access
- Food and water
Common mistakes
- Sleeping in an area that closes
- Assuming you can re-enter security anytime
- Leaving bags unsecured
- Missing early bag drop deadlines
What to do next
If the overnight stay came from a disruption, keep receipts and flight updates. If it was planned, build recovery time into the next day.
