I can't check in online. What does it mean?
Online check-in can fail for ordinary reasons. It does not always mean you cannot fly. It may mean documents need manual review, payment is incomplete, seats are controlled, or the airline wants to see you at the desk.
What to do first
- Read the exact error message.
- Check name, passport, visa, and passenger details.
- Try the airline app and website before assuming the system is broken.
- Plan extra airport time if desk check-in is required.
Step-by-step instructions
- Step 1
Confirm the flight is open for check-in. Some airlines open at different times for domestic, international, or partner flights.
- Step 2
Check whether your passport number, birth date, gender, nationality, or visa details are missing or typed incorrectly.
- Step 3
If the booking is with a partner airline, try the operating airline's reference number as well as the seller's reference.
- Step 4
Look for unpaid baggage, seat, or ticketing issues. A booking confirmation does not always mean every service is ready.
- Step 5
If the message says see agent, prepare documents and arrive earlier. This often means staff need to check eligibility in person.
- Step 6
Take screenshots of errors if you need to show airport staff what happened.
Important things to check
- Check-in opening time
- Operating airline
- Passport validity
- Visa or transit requirements
- Ticket number and booking reference
Common mistakes
- Trying only one browser once
- Arriving at the airport at the last minute
- Ignoring document warnings
- Using the marketing airline site when the operating airline controls check-in
What to do next
If online check-in still fails, treat the airport desk as part of the plan. Bring documents, payment card, and enough time for staff review.
