Airport Survival
I can't find my gate. What should I do?
Not finding a gate is common, especially when airports delay posting it or change it late. The useful question is not Where is my destination? It is Where is flight number X departing from now?
What to do first
- Search by flight number on live airport screens.
- Check terminal first, then gate.
- If no gate is posted, stay near screens.
- Ask staff with flight number and departure time.
Step-by-step instructions
- Step 1
Find a main departure screen and search for your flight number. Destination alone can mislead you when several flights go to the same city.
- Step 2
If the screen says gate open later or wait in lounge, choose a central area where updates are visible.
- Step 3
Check whether your boarding pass terminal matches the current screen. Terminal changes can happen.
- Step 4
Follow signs by terminal zone, pier, concourse, or gate range. Airports often group gates by letters or numbers.
- Step 5
Ask a staff member: I am on flight X at time Y. Which direction should I go now?
- Step 6
When the gate appears, move promptly. Some airports require long walks after the gate is announced.
Important things to check
- Flight number
- Terminal
- Gate range
- Boarding time
- Walking time
Common mistakes
- Following the city name only
- Trusting a gate screenshot from hours ago
- Waiting in a shop far from screens
- Forgetting gate closing time
What to do next
When you reach the gate, check the screen there too. The right gate shows your flight number, destination, and boarding status.
